Obedience Tips 101

  1. 1.)Congratulations, your dog has graduated from Shelly’s School for Dogs! He (or she) has certainly worked hard to earn that diploma. But that doesn’t mean he stops learning. Here are a few tips to ensure that your dog stays happy & obedient for years to come.
  2. 2.)Practice makes permanent. Continue to practice the commands that your dog has learnt at Shelly’s School for Dogs. Repetition is important, and the more of it you do, the sooner the commands will become second nature for your dog. Keep in mind that dogs have a short attention span, so 10 to 15 minute review sessions are ideal.
  3. 3.)Be consistent. Now that your dog has learned to obey commands, make sure that all family members continue to use the same command words. Differences can be confusing for your dog!
  4. 4.)Continue to praise. Make sure to keep praising your dog whenever he gets it right. Praise is a much more powerful tool than punishment, and heaping praise on your dog will ensure that the commands he’s learned at Shelly’s School for Dogs will continue to be reinforced.
  5. 5.)Don’t be afraid to be firm. Remember: no matter how cute your puppy, when he goes against your command, you must learn to be strict and tell him “No.”
